    General Tips [defense]

    Moved from my fansite.

There are several tactics for great defensive setups. None are actually 'wrong' per se - some people prefer their own thing.

Tip 1 - The Road Less Traveled: From what I have seen thus far, most monsters will take the quickest route to their target. This doesn't mean they will attack the wall closest to a tower but I have a feeling the AI for the monsters takes into consideration attacking walls verse walking around them when it comes to attacking. What I mean is this... if a group of monsters are slung in front of your 10 block long wall and there is a tower directly behind it, they will attack through the wall to get to the tower.

If that same wall was say, 5 blocks long, the monsters will run around it to get to the tower.

If you calculate the time it takes for ONE monster to kill the wall verse walking around, the quickest route wins. Even though you may have 10 or 20 monsters, I don't think the AI checks that. Also, when you have walls built 2+ deep, the monsters will almost always find an open gap somewhere (assuming there IS one) and walk around.

So generally speaking, you want to give the enemy AI a run for their money. Build your defenses to force the invading army to go where YOU want it to. So you could build a wall that is 10 long and 2 deep to try and force the enemy to run around. This gives your towers time to whittle away at the enemy and will force them directly around the wall, so a few well placed Booby Traps will give them something to think about

Tip 2 - Back Me Up! : When placing towers, one of the main things you need to take in to consideration is a group of monsters can kill a single tower with minimal casualties. You need to test the range of your towers and make sure each tower has at least one other tower within it's defense range. What this means is when a group of monsters attack Tower A, Tower B will assist in defending Tower A while it's being attacked. Ideally you will want each tower to have 2-3 other towers within range. For beginners this will be tough as low level Splash towers have hardly any range. When getting your towers to level 3+ their range will be great enough to cover other towers.

Tip 3 - Prioritize! : When building your defenses you need to prioritize your buildings from most needed to can live without. Your main buildings go in this order; Town Hall, Silo, Monster Housing (when an army is already built), Factories and then everything else. Your main concern is to keep them protected in that order. There are many different strategies but the best one seems to be surrounding your Town Hall and Silos with Brick Walls (possibly a second wall of Wooden Walls), placing your Factories and Towers around your Town Hall setup and then another Wooden Wall around those structures. You will want to keep your Housing as close to towers as you can.

Tip 4 - Sling 'em! : One main factor most people don't know is the opponent has a minimum amount of distance he must be to sling his monsters in. This is usually (approx.) an inch (on your monitor) away from your furthest building. An enemy cannot sling his troops directly next to or past your buildings. The best way to control where he can place his monsters is by placing your 'loose' buildings around your base on the outside. Always leave them within range of a Snipe Tower. The monsters will either a) attack the building or b) walk around it to the tower. Regardless of what happens, your towers will have a great advantage when defending. They will be able to hit the monsters while they move or are attacking a building.

Tip 5 - Disillusionment : One strategy I have found to work on several occasions is to have several low level Factories placed on the opposite side of your base with minimal defense. These full up quickly and most people will fall for the bait. There are several full ! factories and only one tower defending it... sweet! This will keep your Town Hall clear on some occasions.

Tip 6 - Brawn Before Beauty : Some people may disagree with this but it works for me, quite well. When placing your towers behind walls, place your higher level towers in front, not your lower level ones. Your low level towers will get eaten through very quickly. It will take monsters longer to destroy your higher level ones. This means more overall damage. This doesn't mean stick your high level towers out undefended. This is mainly for Snipe's as they have decent range even at low levels. If you have a low level splash, place it within range of a Snipe tower so it can attack while the Snipe is under fire.

More to come (images as well).

Similar to your attack strategy, this one seems geared for level 10-25 people

    Defense strategy for level 30+:

Put your towers in a bundle. Put them all within range of each other.
Put your Silos and Town Hall AROUND your towers.
Put Factories around your Silos and Town Hall.
Put everything else on the outside.

Stone walls go around towers. Traps are cleverly placed in intentional gaps in the wall and on corners of towers.
Wood walls go around factories. Again, clever holes in the walls with traps in them.

No one is going to loot a silo that is covered by 12 towers. No one. It is ridiculous. So even if a Silo is on the OUTSIDE of the 12 towers, it is still within range of them. No one will loot that. Towers are more important that Silos. Put them in the middle.

Again you fail to understand that these tips are for all no matter what level you are. Just because you set up your base in a different fashion than what is outlined in my tips post doesn't mean it's geared towards lower levels. And as you can see if you read the bottom it says 'More to come (images as well). '. I could literally sit here for hours on end and write different TIPS for attacking and defending. I am Lv31 and still see MOST players putting their towers right behind wooden/stone blocks completely ignoring all the tips on routing and factory blocking, etc. I don't have an endless amount of time to write these up and take screenshots, etc. If you care to add something erm... useful, and write it up nicely I will add it to the main post (with credit).

Lemme be simple, whether my statement of what level your strategy is geared for is correct or not, I have a fundamental argument with one of the main points: Of all the most highly defended bases I have ever seen, Towers go in the middle, Silos and Town Hall around that. You stated the opposite. I've tried 2-3 different high grade arrangements of Towers around Silos and Town Hall and it just isn't the best. My current arrangement has the Towers in the middle. Feel free to take a stab at it if you want and see why I argue that Towers should be the most protected building you have.

You two make me laugh, cause it's very clear that you both consider yourselves near-experts at your level, and it's clear you are both at different levels. Anyway, I've never seen such a fierce display of alpha-male-ism. If it were me and my sister having this ... difference of opinions ... my uncle would say "girls you are both pretty" and we'd know to shut the heck up.

FROM WHAT I GATHER (I can't prove the theory yet, really, cause I JUST SPENT 2 and a half hours today rearranging my base and basically - I don't feel like it yet) is that towers on the inside theoretically work when they're leveled up to 5 and completely protected by the silos. Then the tower-attackers HAAAAAVE to get through the silos, etc.. to get TO the towers. It makes sense. And you know what else is a good strategy? Putting them behind walls and putting your silos behind towers. In other words... you're both pretty. Thank you, gentlemen, for showing me both sides of the coin so I can pick and choose accordingly to what works for me.

Why don't you just stay out of my posts? You are making a complete fool of yourself over and over again. Do you know what TIPS are? They are SUGGESTIONS that are a little more complex than BASICS. Everything in here are SUGGESTIONS players can follow to make their base a little more than BASIC. Some tips are used by all levels and some by lower levels. IT'S A TIPS POST, not a HOW DO BE THE BEST AT EVERYTHING. You miss the point of every post and just go on to sticking your foot in your mouth. I have a total of 16 players on my map that are Lv30 to Lv36. 2 players, yes - I said TWO players, have their towers bunched up in the middle of their base. The other 14 have their towers set up in several different fashions. So it seems to me your numbers are a little off here kiddo. 88% of those players do NOT use the bunching tactic. Are their bases defended more poorly than yours? Haha, no. One of those so called bases was the one that took more than 10 attacks to penetrate. Which is another thing I forgot to mention earlier. Placing Booby Traps in OBVIOUS holes/alleys is the WORST idea I have EVER heard when it comes to defending your base. You want Booby Traps placed where the attacker WILL NOT know where they are. You want a player to become confident when attacking you only to discover that a well placed Booby Trap just killed half of his attacking monsters. If you place a Booby Trap in an obvious place your defense will hold a good 75% LESS than strategically placed Traps WITHIN your base.

I agree with Curtis to a certain extent. The problem is that any base can be torn apart (unless someone is gaming the system to prevent any of their towers to be taken down before they go into damage protection) given enough time and patience on the part of the attacker. This is how I've built my base - let them take down my towers, it'll take them 4-8 attacks and then they have that final attack on my resources. This is what I gear to protect against - that last attack. Keep them from taking more than a tiny bit from my Silos and TH.

Will it force them to go through 8-10 attacks like the 3x4 block of towers? Nope. Will it mean that they don't walk away with more than what my 4 Silos hold, even if they plan carefully? Absolutely.

This has nothing to do with thinking I'm an expert. I have stated several times these are TIPS, not rocket science tested theories that proved to be omnipotent. This guy wants to come in and attack my TIPS trying to force his version of what he thinks is right on me and I have every right to put him in his place.

Again as I just stated. When it comes to what we are both saying you can't agree with him because I never offered another solution or rebuttal directly at his 'idea'. You are more than welcome to attack my base and then a base that has all their towers bunched up. I guarantee you will take just as many attempts at my base as you will the other. I focus my time setting up my base to reroute the monsters once something is destroyed. Regardless of what anyone says there is one fact that no one can argue. The further a monster has to travel to get to a tower, the more damage is done to the monster. A monster or group, for instance, could be attacking one of my Lv5 Snipe towers. But once that tower is destroyed, the monsters have to backtrack around everything to get to the next tower and so on. But since everyone wants to throw their opinion around I will do the same. I think having your towers bunched up will eventually lead to a greater loss of resources when someone finally breaks in. Once someone has direct access to your towers, they no longer need to attack anything else or move around buildings to get to them making them easier to destroy.

Thought I might throw in also that all my Snipe towers are close enough to attack a group of monsters no matter what they are attacking while trying to get in my base. And my Splash are setup to maximize the damage while rerouting.
